Tips To Prevent A Cyber Attack On Your Business & Home:
Cyber-attacks are becoming a way of life, with the latest being a worldwide hack into Microsoft operating systems called Wannacry. This latest attack is another example of the vulnerabilities that all computer systems have. Following are some common cents things you can do to help lessen the risk of being a victim of a cyber-attack: Make sure that your operating system is up to date. Download patches (updates) provided by your vendor as they are released. Use anti-virus software and run updates often. Do not open suspicious emails, look for misspelled words, do you know the sender and is this how a normal email looks from them. Be careful of emails making offers to click on a link to redeem or update your information, even if you recognize the sender as your bank, Amazon, UPS, etc. Many times these are phishing attempts to gather your personal information/passwords or access to your computer. Change passwords often and do not use the same passwords for all of you logins. Do not store your passwords on your computer. Create strong passwords using upper and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Be wary of using public Wi-Fi when using password sensitive websites. Hackers have been known to access laptops and phones through unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots. Also make sure that the Wi-Fi at your home and business are secured by strong passwords. Be sure to lock your phone and laptop. If you lose them it will be much harder to get your information by creating strong passwords. Be careful of what you post on social media such as Facebook. Hackers are able to obtain personal information that you have posted that can be used to hack you (answers to security questions). Increase your employees and family's awareness of cyber risks. Discuss and remind everyone to be aware of the above items often. If you practice prevention on a day-to-day basis your chances of being hacked will decrease significantly.
